A boost in the number of business events post-GC2018 is already expected to inject more than $80 million into the Queensland economy.
After serving up 21,000 meals for the official 2018 Commonwealth Games host broadcaster, local company Piquant Catering Queensland says they are ready to achieve further records this year.
Piquant competed against a number of international companies to land the Commonwealth Games catering deal, which took a year’s worth of preparation to get right.
Over 17 days the 50-strong team cooked up 1.5 tonne of chicken and 800 kilograms of rice and vegetables for NEP's 1,200 crew at their Coomera production kitchen within the Riviera building.
Sarah Brenac, Piquant Catering Queensland’s Director of Food and Beverage says 250 of the 1,200 crew had specialty dietary requirements ranging from Halal to Pescatarian to Gluten Free.
“It was exceptionally challenging to produce 1,200 high quality meals a day and then ensure delivery to NEP crew members across 11 venues,” she said.
Piquant Catering was founded in Sydney by Carl and Justine Nicholls, who teamed up with Sarah on the Gold Coast two years ago. Companies Porsche, McLaren, Aston Martin and Marcs are among Piquant's other big name clients.
“We believe the Games is just the start - we are certainly looking for more big opportunities," said Sarah.
Gold Coast to benefit from post Games boost to tourism
The wins for Queensland companies are expected to continue, with business events forming an important part of the Gold Coast’s tourism sector.
In a recent statement, Assistant Tourism Industry Development Minister Meaghan Scanlon said she was committed to capitalising on the incredible exposure the Games has delivered for Queensland.
“We’ve already secured 47 extra business events for the Gold Coast in the coming years, which we expect to attract more than 24,000 people and inject $82 million into the economy,” Ms Scanlon said.
“Without the Commonwealth Games, much of this wouldn’t be possible.
According to Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, the Games are expected to generate additional exports and foreign direct investment of around $488 million in the next four years post-GC2018.
