Free program helps you work towards starting your own business
Are you looking to set up a business? The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) has an online module called First Business, part of its MoneySmart program, designed to help you decide whether starting a small business is right for you.
It is important to note that this resource does not discuss the various types of business structures in detail, instead focusing on a sole trader structure without employees.
The First Business program is divided into eight parts including Getting Started, Business planning and support, information on laws and regulations, and insurance tax. Each part includes a scenario to put everything in context, reflect on and help grow your business idea and an activity to apply your new knowledge.
Once you have finished working through this resource, and decided that you are ready to bring your idea to life, you can also download the First Business app to help guide you through the requirements for kick starting your new business.
The First Business app also includes a business health check; starting your business checklist; case studies; and a networking section that provides tips and ideas about how to develop your business network.
MoneySmart also has financial calculators, budget planners, tips to manage debt, and other guides on borrowing, superannuation, and investing. It is available for Android or iOS.
