“This takes the pressure off workers and businesses - there is no excuse to not get tested at the first sign of symptoms and isolate until the results are in.”
The Victorian Government is extending the coronavirus worker support payment to make sure Victorians don’t have to choose between the safety of their workmates and their community – and putting food on the table.
Department of Health and Human Services data shows that as many as nine out of ten people who later test positive are not self-isolating between the onset of symptoms and getting a test. In addition, 53 per cent of positive cases did not isolate between being tested and receiving their results.
The current worker support payment recognises that the requirement to self-isolate or quarantine can leave workers and their families struggling to make ends meet, with a one-off payment of $1,500 available to workers who are unable to work during their isolation, have no income during this period, and are not entitled to any paid sick leave, special pandemic leave or other income support.
The Government will now extend the scheme to ensure that as soon as a person is tested, they will be eligible for a $300 support payment from the Victorian Government – as long as they meet the eligibility of the existing scheme.
Premier Daniel Andrews said, “To fight this virus we need every Victorian who is sick to get tested and then stay home. If you are waiting for a test, you must stay home until you are notified of your result.”
“We know that having to isolate can mean missing work– and no one should be making the choice between their health and putting food on the table – that’s why we’re making sure those who need our support can get it.”
Victorian businesses support the announcement, with Victorian Chamber members reporting that they are making all the necessary arrangements to keep operating safely and this is another mechanism that will enable workers to do the right thing and isolate when they experience any symptoms and get tested.
“This payment will be a huge help to Victorians to do the right thing and isolate when they get a Covid-19 test and are awaiting their results,” said Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chief Executive Paul Guerra.
“We know it is hard for many workers at the moment who may be experiencing reduced shifts or hours due to the restrictions in place in Victoria and, if they don’t have sick leave, losing the income of just one shift is more than they can afford.
“This takes the pressure off those workers and businesses as there is no excuse to not get tested at the first sign of symptoms and isolate until the results are in.
“We’re in for the fight of our lives in this Covid-19 battle and we all have to pull together and look out for each other. Getting tested when you have any symptoms is the right thing to do and protecting your co-workers and local community by isolating while you await your results should be automatic for everyone.”
